General Description

Popular is seeking a highly skilled professional with a strong quantitative background and legal expertise to join our Model Risk Management team. This hybrid role blends statistical modeling and data analysis with a deep understanding of federal and local regulatory frameworks. The ideal candidate will be capable of translating complex mathematical concepts into accessible language for non-technical audiences and drafting comprehensive model risk management reports with legal and regulatory components.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Validates, tests, documents, implements, and / or oversees usage of quantitative / statistical and AML models. The statistical models are utilized in forecasting of the bank’s deposit, revenues, stress scenario and allowances. BSA / AML models cover Anti Money Laundering, Sanction Screening, Know Your Customer (KYC), Client Due Diligence (CDD), and other forms of financial crimes monitoring.
  • Draft detailed technical and regulatory reports on model risk, ensuring compliance with frameworks such as SR 11-7, OCC 2011-12, and local banking regulations, including but not limited to presentations, written reports, model or reporting code documentation, business requirements, monitoring reports, and procedures.
  • Provide effective challenge on the conceptual and technical soundness of the models’ design, theory, and framework through various testing methods following guidelines based on SR 11-7.
  • Interact with stakeholders such as model developers, model sponsors, model users, and production, to support model risk management related activities.
  • Translate complex quantitative findings into clear, actionable insights for regulatory, compliance and executive stakeholders.
  • Actively participate in reviewing model documentation and validation reports, incorporating legal and governance considerations.
  • Work optimally as a team member with other quantitative analysts at Popular, as well with external consultants.
  • Stay current with evolving regulatory requirements and trends in model risk management.
  • Assess model performance monitoring processes and conduct model annual periodic reviews.

Experience

  • At least 2 years of experience in regulatory compliance, legal risk management, or quantitative analysis is desirable.
  • Familiarity with U.S. federal and local banking regulations (including FDIC, OCC, FRB, OCIF, among others), as well as BSA, AML, OFAC, and fraud-related requirements, is considered
  • Other Qualifications

  • Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work with multiple tasks simultaneously, establish priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to negotiate effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish.
  • Proven experience drafting extensive regulatory or legal reports.
  • Computer and technological skills : Proficiency in the Microsoft suite of products (i.e., PowerPoint, Excel, Power BI, Word, etc.)
  • Candidates should possess strong scientific and technical documentation and presentation abilities, effective assertiveness and influencing skills, as well as the capability to communicate theoretical concepts clearly to non-expert audiences using accessible language.
